What is KPV?

KPV is the C-terminal tripeptide Lys-Pro-Val of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone. It has attracted attention because experimental models suggest anti-inflammatory activity without the pigmentary activity associated with full-length alpha-MSH.

Proposed mechanism

Experimental studies suggest KPV can suppress inflammatory signalling, including NF-kappaB-related pathways, cytokine responses and leukocyte migration. Its signalling appears more complex than simple melanocortin-receptor activation.

What has been published?

Published work includes cell studies, animal inflammation models and reviews discussing possible applications in inflammatory skin, bowel, lung and ocular disease.

Current human evidence

Robust clinical efficacy trials of KPV itself are lacking. Human-cell experiments are informative mechanistically but do not establish therapeutic benefit in patients.
